Stewardship Ontario Increases Environmental Surcharge Effective Jan. 1, 2020

Stewardship Ontario, the body that administers EHC surcharges, has released a new fee structure which came into effect on January 1, 2010.  Under the amended provincial policy, EHC charges for oil filters, antifreeze, and solvents have all been increased.

The new charges are:

  • Oil Filters under 8 inches:                $0.60 each
  • Oil Filters over 8 inches:                  $1.19  each
  • Bulk Antifreeze:                               $0.08  per litre
  • Packaged Antifreeze:                      $0.09  per litre
  • Solvents:                                         $0.44  per litre

Ontario Implements New Environmental Charges on Parts and Fluids Used in Auto Service Industry

ONTARIO WASTE DIVERSION PROGRAM – Municipal Hazardous or Special Wastes

ADDITIONAL FEES FOR RECOVERY OF DESIGNATED MSHW

The Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste (MHSW) Program is a waste diversion plan to keep household and commercial hazardous waste out of our waterways and landfill sites.

The plan was developed by Stewardship Ontario in conjunction with affected industry stewards, on behalf of Waste Diversion Ontario, at the request of the Ontario Minister of the Environment. It received the Minister’s approval in February 2008.  The plan went into effect on July 1, 2008.

The following items will have additional fees charged to their distribution to installers and end users:

Oil Filters – 8 inches diameter or less

$0.499 per unit

Oil Filters – over 8 inches in diameter

$0.998 per unit

Oil Containers

$0.045 per litre

Antifreeze

$0.196 per litre

Solvents

$0.196 per litre

Aerosol Paints and Coatings

$0.028 per unit

Single use batteries

$0.125   per kg

 

Please note: these prices became effective on all items purchased after July 1, 2008.

This new program makes Ontario the sixth Canadian province to have a used filter and container program in place.
